Exploring Creativity, Connection, and Community

In a world where social gatherings often revolve around alcohol, it's refreshing to discover that vibrant and fulfilling experiences are happening right here in Jersey that don't require a drop.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a poetry workshop evening organised by Art House Jersey, and it was a fantastic experience, filled with connection, self-discovery, and creativity among like-minded souls.

The evening commenced with a unique exercise called "speed poetry." Guided by Traci, we moved around the room, spending just a couple of minutes with each piece of artwork. The goal was simple: connect with the artwork, absorb its colours, shapes, and emotions, and let words flow freely onto paper.

The beauty of this exercise lies in its simplicity. No prior experience in poetry was required, and there were no judgments or critiques. It was about tapping into our inner creativity, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, and expressing what we felt in response to the art.

As the night unfolded, Traci introduced us to the concept of mirror poems, where two related poems could be read independently, with each poem reflecting or responding to the other. We were tasked with creating a mirror poem, with each participant assigned a picture based on what they were wearing.

In my case, wearing a bright green dress, I found myself matched with an image of Godzilla (an uncanny resemblance, don't you think?).

The connection between my attire and the monstrous creature was, at first glance, amusing to me. However, as I delved deeper into the artwork and my own reflection, I discovered unexpected parallels. Just like Godzilla destroyed the town, I could see my own ADHD following me around the house, leaving a trail of destruction everywhere I went. I enjoyed this introspective moment through the creative interplay of words and images.

What I experienced that evening was not merely about poetry or art but the magic of creative exploration in a safe, welcoming space where everyone, regardless of their artistic background, could come together to experiment and play.

In a world that often demands perfection, this session served as a refreshing reminder that we don't have to be experts to give something a try. We can embrace our inner child, be playful, and experiment in a nurturing environment where everyone is there for a reason – to explore, connect, and grow.

What makes events like this one so remarkable is their capacity to foster real connections. In a society where socialising often centers around alcohol, it can be challenging to find meaningful interactions. Yet, in the world of art and creativity, we discover a community of individuals who share a common passion and a desire to connect on a deeper level.

The absence of alcohol also allows for more authentic connections. Instead of relying on a drink to break the ice, participants engage in conversations that revolve around shared experiences, emotions, and the beauty of the art that surrounds them. These connections are lasting, as they are built on a foundation of authenticity.

If you're looking to break away from the usual social scene and try something different, I encourage you to explore the vibrant arts and culture community right here in Jersey. Whether it's a poetry workshop, an art exhibition, a theater performance, or a creative writing class, there are countless opportunities to connect with yourself and others in meaningful ways.

Remember, you don't have to be exceptionally skilled or experienced to dive into the world of creativity. The only prerequisite is a willingness to explore and experiment. In these safe and welcoming spaces, you'll find a community of kindred spirits who are on their own journeys of self-discovery and expression.

Green Spectrum

Crushed.

I'm doing my best.

It's a mess.

Taking over.

The ringing in my ears,

The sound of bells overwhelms.

ADHD is a green monster, a distraction.

Keep on top of the mess!

How can you not see it?

Where did you put that?

My husband looking over the horizon.

I tried to keep it tidy.

I didn't mean to break it.

Destruction following me around the house.
